Jackie Robinson played in 47 games with the Monarchs, hitting .387 with 5 home runs and 12 stolen bases. He set his sights higher to Major League Baseball, but that was a long shot since the last black man who played in the major leagues was Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1884.
Still, he joined a tryout with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park for black players. Unfortunately, these were not serious tryouts and he left feeling defeated.
But Robinson performed so outstandingly with the Monarchs that he captured the attention of the general manager for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey. \Ricky decided Jackie Robinson would be the perfect player to break the MLB color line.
After a lengthy interview, Ricky signed him to a contract worth $600 per month (or about $10,700 per month today). After an incredible season in the Minor Leagues where he batted .349 and had a .985 fielding percentage, he was named the league’s MVP opening his door to the Majors.
On April 11, 1947 history was made when Robinson debuted as a Dodger in a preseason game against the New York Yankees. Just 4 days later on April 15th, he made his major league debut becoming the first player to do so in 63 years.
While there were racist attacks and insults by players, spectators, coaches, and the general public, many players and the Baseball Commissioner Happy Chandler stood up for Robinson.
He finished the season with a .297 batting average and .427 slugging percentage with 175 hits, including 12 home runs. This performance earned him the very first Rookie of the Year Award.
With Robinson’s help, the Brooklyn Dodgers won the National League pennant and lost in game 7 in the 1947 World Series. Even though there was a lot of racial tension for years afterward, the racial barrier was officially broken and Major League Baseball would never be segregated again.
