One of the highlights of his celebrated career came when he scored 81 points in a game against the Toronto Raptors on January 22nd, 2006, which was the second most points scored in a game at the time (only Wilt Chamberlain’s legendary 100-point game in 1962 was more) and still remains at number three after Bam Debayo scored 83 points in March of 2026. 

Bryant would retire in 2016, finishing his career with 33,643 points, ranking fourth on the all-time scoring list at the time of his retirement. 

After-Career Accomplishments 

Beyond his outstanding career, Kobe Bryant used the same competitiveness that earned him the nickname “Black Mamba” into new business ventures. 

In 2018, Koba won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for Dear Basketball, which started as a poem he wrote in 2015 about the game he loved so dearly. 

Kobe also founded Granity Studios, a company focused on creating sports-themed stories for children. Here, he would write several books including the Wizenard Series and The Mamba Mentality: How I Play, which is a look at his approach to basketball and became a bestseller. The End of a Legacy

Kobe Bryant’s life would end in tragedy on January 26th, 2020. He and his daughter, Gianna, were killed in a helicopter crash in California. Unfortunately, he was on his way to a youth basketball tournament, showing his dedication to the new generation of athletes and the sport he loved so much. 

The world mourned deeply for the impact he made on the court, and off. Still, his legacy lives on. Not only is he cemented into the history of the NBA, but he will always be remembered for his accomplishments off the court and his Mamba Mentality that drives motivation for athletes to this day.
