Originally manufactured in the United Kingdom during the height of the Second World War as a British WWII despatch rider helmet (HSDR), this piece later saw distinguished postwar service reissued to the Hellenic Armed Forces.
The helmet features a sturdy, dome-shaped steel shell finished in deep olive green paint, displaying honest combat wear, paint chipping, and natural age patina throughout. Prominently hand-painted in white period lettering across the front is the official Greek acronym “ΥΕΣΑ” (Ypiresia Epeigousas Stratiotikis Allilografias—Emergency Military Mail & Despatch Courier Service). This distinctive insignia confirms this Greek Army YESA helmet was issued to high-speed motorcycle couriers responsible for transporting vital battle orders, diplomatic pouches, and classified dispatches across challenging terrain during the Greek Civil War and early Cold War eras.
Inside, the helmet retains its original British padded motor transport liner system, complete with thick protective felt cushioning, ear flaps, and a supple brown leather neck roll and band. The leather is crisply stamped “BMB” (Briggs Motor Bodies Ltd.), dated 1942, and marked size 6 3/4, establishing this as a verified BMB 1942 steel helmet. While the top drawstring lacing shows honest period tearing, the overall liner and chinstrap assembly remain largely intact with excellent character (Condition: II – III).
