Description
This is an authentic World War II-era Japanese Yosegaki Hinomaru—a traditional “good luck flag” presented to soldiers upon their deployment. The flag features the iconic red sun disc (Hinomaru) at its center, surrounded by numerous handwritten messages and names from family, friends, and fellow villagers, wishing the recipient bravery, safety, and victory in battle. This historic piece carries deep cultural and emotional significance.
At the top, the large calligraphic phrase 「武運長久」 (Bu’un Chōkyū) translates to “eternal fortune in war,” a common patriotic message. On the right-hand side, the dedication reads: 「祝 久山速雄君」 (Congratulations to Mr. Hayao Hisayama), indicating this flag was a personal gift. Below that, the sender’s name is inscribed: 「三上精太郎」 (Seitaro Mikami). The flag is filled with signatures written in traditional brush calligraphy, adding to its authenticity and historical charm.
The fabric shows age-appropriate wear, slight staining, and fraying at the edges—consistent with items of this period and indicative of its original use and handling. One corner is reinforced with leather and retains a string for attachment or display.
This artifact is a poignant reminder of Japan’s wartime history and is highly collectible for historians, military memorabilia enthusiasts, and those interested in Japanese culture.
