Description
Historical Significance
The 1877 Remington-Smoot .32 Revolver No. 2 .Rimfire Revolver, made between 1878 and 1888, is a rare single-action, spur-trigger revolver with a distinctive bird’s head grip, chambered for .32 Rimfire Short. Designed for concealed carry post-Civil War, it features a 2.75-inch octagonal barrel marked “E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, N.Y. Pat. W.S. Smoot Oct. 21, 1873,” a fluted five-shot cylinder, and a nickel-plated finish with checkered hard rubber grips. With an estimated production of around 3,000 units—significantly fewer than the No. 3’s 25,000—this Remington revolver is highly sought after for its scarcity. This 1877 revolver’s compact size and concealability made it popular in the Old West among gamblers, shopkeepers, and travelers in places like Virginia City. Saloon owners often kept it under counters for protection during brawls.
