Description
British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France.
A notable letter, signed ‘yrs ever Montgomery of Alamein’ in Paris, Dec. 12, 1952. On his letterhead, ‘Field Marshal the Viscount Montgomery of Alamein’, to Jeffrey Herman in Ceylon.
“I am glad to hear you had a good passage out of Colombo…I hope everything will work out alright about your future journey to Korea. Let me know when you get there…Everything is going very well and John is slowly picking up the ropes…at the end of the year, he should speak French quite well. I am taking him with me to Switzerland, to Murren and to Gstaad. On the way…we are going to Rome for two nights so that I can see the Pope again”
Pope Pius XII (1876 – 1958) maintained neutrality in World War II, but appears to have harbored an affinity for Germany. However, his sympathies lay with the Allies and the United States in particular, transferring and investing the Vatican’s considerable assets into the war fund. He also discreetly contributed aid to the victims of the Nazis. Several holograph emendations and original envelope addressed in his hand, very good.
